The column is dedicated to Admiral Ivar Huitfeldt and the crew of his ship, the Dannebroge, during the Great Northern War's Battle of Køge Bay. When the ship caught fire, Huitfeldt continued the battle rather than retreat, sacrificing himself and his crew when the Dannebroge exploded — an act that allowed the rest of the Danish fleet to escape.
Erected in 1886, the granite column is crowned with a bronze statue of Victoria, goddess of victory, holding a laurel wreath. Bronze reliefs on the base depict Huitfeldt's portrait, coat of arms, and ship, while cannonballs and an anchor add to its maritime character.
