Braga is Portugal's oldest city, founded by the Romans in 16 BC as Bracara Augusta.
Tucked into the green hills of the Minho region in northern Portugal, it sits just 50 minutes from Porto by train - close enough for a day trip, compelling enough to deserve longer.
The historic centre is compact and walkable, built around a medieval cathedral that predates the country itself. Baroque churches, Roman ruins, and elegant 18th-century gardens sit side by side without much fuss. Braga has a large student population, which gives it an energy that older Portuguese cities sometimes lack.
It's religious, youthful, and quietly proud - and still largely free of the tourist saturation that has transformed so much of the country.
