Some cities do Easter quietly and peacefully.

Seville does not.

Right now, the city is transformed by Semana Santa: a week of candlelight, incense, drums, gold and intense emotion unlike almost anywhere else in Europe.

The floats carry religious sculptures through the streets, and from balconies people sing prayers that cut through the noise.

But the Holy Week is only part of the draw.

Spring is when Seville comes fully alive, with orange blossom throughout the city, mild temperatures and streets packed with stories, tombs and secrets.

Destination of the Week

Seville differs from other European cities because of its mixed history of Christian and Muslim rule.

After the Christian conquest in 1248, much of its Islamic heritage was not erased, but reused and built into the new city.

The clearest example is the Giralda, which transformed from a Mosque to the bell tower of Seville Cathedral.

That layered approach still defines Seville now: instead of replacing the old city with skyscrapers and business districts, it has let modern architecture sit alongside its historic core.

One of Seville’s most interesting sights is the Tomb of Christopher Columbus inside the Cathedral.

You´ll clearly get the sense that the locals are quite proud of this explorer; his tomb is carried by four statues, that represents the historic kingdoms of Spain.

But how can you know if Columbus is actually in there?

For years, there was debate over whether his bones were really in Seville - but a 2024 DNA study led by researchers in Spain concluded that the remains in the grand tomb are indeed his.

Seville is said to have the largest number of orange trees in the world.

According to Seville’s official tourism site, these trees have shaped the city for centuries, and their blossom is one of the scents that makes spring in Seville so unforgettable.

You can find a huge amount of the orange trees at the Patio de Banderas square.

Sound’s great, right?

But here’s the twist: the fruit is bitter, not sweet.

So even though they smell so inviting in spring, hold off with the snacking…

The Trendy Traveler Tip

Want to snack like they did 700 years ago?

Then head for Convento de San Leandro, where you can get fresh yemas – a traditional Spanish sweet – straight from a nuns’ cloister.

You buy them through an old revolving wooden hatch — a wonderfully old-fashioned ritual that feels far more memorable than a regular bakery stop.

So skip the obvious dessert spots, ring the bell and enjoy one of Seville’s strangest little traditions.
