Fredericia was a religious sanctuary as far back as 1682. It has left its mark on the city and its inhabitants.
Test your knowledge and quiz along the way – fun with groups!
Freedom of religion was unheard of in Denmark in the 1600s. Everyone had to pray to the same god as the king. But the king needed people in the fortress city of Fredericia. So, to attract settlers, the city was granted far-reaching privileges—both economic and religious. This meant all Christian denominations and Jews could settle and practice their faith freely. In 1719, the king invited the Reformed to Fredericia. They brought new crops, and the tobacco industry they helped build became the city's key trade for 200 years. Check out the churches too—most have no bell towers. In a fortress city, buildings couldn’t rise above the walls. Towers would have made good targets. And that wouldn’t do. Enjoy your tour of this unique religious sanctuary.
