Life was tough for the soldiers who were confined in Fredericia leading up to July 6, 1849. The daily ration consisted of dry bread, salted pork, and a few peas. The only bright spot was 15 cl. of brandy, but it quickly ran out. Outside the walls awaited the noise of the battlefield, blood, sweat, and fear. Here lives and limbs were at stake. The tension leading up to July 6 was rising. Tens of thousands of soldiers had arrived across the belt. Now the outcome was imminent. Now. At night. Quite unprecedented. After three hours, the battle was over. The Danes had won. And they were celebrated with sweet soup, warm beer, and coffee. Or as an eyewitness reports: "Brandy and steaming beer were poured from the large buckets,... while grain and oat soup, along with mountains of open sandwiches, disappeared with astonishing speed through the insatiable mouths."
