It was not just a collection of houses that the Moravian Brothers erected. It was a community built on equality and fellowship. A city that today is UNESCO world heritage.
Test your knowledge and quiz along the way – fun with groups!
In many ways, the society that the Moravian Brothers created was far ahead of their time. They believed more in the desire for learning than harsh discipline in children's development. They arranged living and working communities for singles, widows, and unmarried people. They prioritized community over the individual and created a society based on welfare, learning, and equality - a kind of welfare society, just a couple of hundred years before the concept was invented.
While Danes in the countryside lived in dark, low-ceilinged timber-framed houses with clay floors, the Moravian Brothers built houses with solid foundations and fully bricked walls - durable houses that still stand today.
They built a city based on light, air, and cleanliness. And they created a social cohesion so strong that it still - here 250 years later - exists.
