I recently found myself in the building called BLOX in Copenhagen, which isn't your typical historical landmark. If you're curious about modern urban development, architecture, or just looking for a unique experience that blends culture with city life, you'll want to read on. 

I’ll share my firsthand impressions and practical tips to help you decide if this contemporary structure deserves a spot on your Copenhagen itinerary.

What is the story behind BLOX?

BLOX stands on what was once an industrial stretch of waterfront, a far cry from the vibrant space you see today. Imagine an old brewery, burnt down in the 1960s, then years of emptiness. Fast forward to 2018, and this area was transformed. 

The vision, spearheaded by Dutch architects OMA, was to create a "mini-city" – a stack of green-glazed blocks literally bridging a busy ring road. It boldly connects Copenhagen's parliament district with the harbor, allowing city life to flow right through it. 

This audacious design certainly got people talking, sparking both excitement and debate among locals, but it undeniable revitalized a neglected part of the city.

What is BLOX in Copenhagen?

So, what exactly is this green-tinted, stacked building that looks like LEGO blocks by the water? 

BLOX is a multifunctional hub, often described as a "city in a city". Its distinctive architecture houses the Danish Architecture Center (DAC), a dynamic co-working space, residential apartments, charming cafes, and even a fitness center. 

It’s designed to be a living, breathing part of Copenhagen's commitment to modern urban living and sustainable development, transforming a once-overlooked area into a lively meeting point. The building’s transparent panels offer glimpses of the city, the harbor, and the people moving through it.

What can I see in BLOX?

Stepping inside BLOX, your main destination will likely be the Danish Architecture Center (DAC). Here, you can immerse yourself in engaging exhibitions on Danish design and urban planning, showcasing everything from Jan Gehl's city concepts to Arne Jacobsen's iconic work. 

A highlight you absolutely shouldn’t miss is "The Big Slide", a playful 40-meter art installation that sends you spiraling down four floors – it’s a surprisingly exhilarating way to move between exhibits! 

You’ll also spot famous buildings recreated in LEGO, a clever nod to Danish creativity. Beyond the DAC, explore cafes with stunning harbor views, a well-stocked design shop, and public spaces like a family-friendly playground by the water.

What exhibitions are there in DAC?

At the Danish Architecture Center (DAC), you’ll find a rotating array of thought-provoking exhibitions. 

During my visit, and running until May 2026, "Age of Nature" explores innovative ways architecture can integrate with nature to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss. It offers inspiring ideas, from buildings designed to host plants and animals to merging technology with the natural world. 

Don't overlook the permanent exhibition, "So Danish!", which takes you on a fascinating journey through a thousand years of Danish architecture, from Viking settlements to contemporary designs.

What is the most iconic building in Denmark?

Denmark is rich with architectural gems, from ancient castles to cutting-edge contemporary structures. While many buildings vie for "most iconic", the Copenhagen Opera House certainly makes a strong case with its striking modern design on the harbor, known for its opulent interiors. 

Then there’s Kronborg Castle in Helsingør, immortalized as Elsinore in Shakespeare's Hamlet, a grand Renaissance fortress steeped in history. The Royal Library’s "Black Diamond" also stands out with its reflective black granite facade. 

And of course, BLOX itself, while newer, represents Denmark's forward-thinking architectural prowess, revitalizing the city's waterfront with its bold, multifunctional hub.

Is the Danish Architecture Center worth visiting?

Absolutely, the Danish Architecture Center (DAC) is well worth your time, especially if you have an interest in design, urban planning, or just appreciate unique cultural spaces. Housed within the impressive BLOX building, the DAC’s exhibitions are thoughtfully curated, showcasing Danish architecture from its earliest forms to its sustainable future. 

Beyond the engaging displays, there's the unforgettable 40-meter slide, which provides a fun, interactive break. The DAC Café offers panoramic views of Copenhagen's inner harbor, perfect for a coffee. With activities and trails specifically for children, it’s a place that caters to both adults and families alike.

Is it worth visiting BLOX?

BLOX offers a truly unique experience in Copenhagen, though it can be a bit polarizing. Its bold, modern architecture is an attraction in itself, housing the excellent Danish Architecture Center (DAC). You'll find engaging exhibitions, the thrilling "Big Slide", and cafes boasting splendid harbor views. 

However, its distinctive, sometimes "uncomfortable" or "faceless" design has drawn criticism, with some finding the multiple entrances confusing or the internal flow unclear. Offices overlooking exhibition spaces might also feel a bit odd.

I'd recommend visiting weekday mornings to avoid crowds at the DAC. Architecture enthusiasts, families (thanks to the slide and playground), and those keen on urban development will likely enjoy BLOX most. 

Adult admission to DAC is 135 DKK, with free entry for under-18s; the Copenhagen Card includes it. Plan for 2-3 hours for the DAC.
