For years, the big Christmas market on Kongens Nytorv was one of the highlights of Christmas in Copenhagen. The market has moved around in recent seasons – to Thorvaldsens Plads in 2024 and to Nytorv in 2025 – and in 2026 it spreads across the two connected squares of Nytorv and Gammeltorv as Julemarked Nytorv & Gammeltorv.

Is There Still a Christmas Market on Kongens Nytorv?

Not in the same way. Today, Kongens Nytorv is home to Copenhagen Winter Wonderland, an ice rink that winds around the square. The organisers have confirmed it returns in November 2026, but dates haven’t been announced yet.
The classic Christmas market experience has moved a few minutes’ walk away to Nytorv and Gammeltorv, right on Strøget.
When Is Julemarked Nytorv & Gammeltorv Open in 2026?
The market is open from 6 November to 21 December 2026, making it the first of the big Copenhagen markets to open. Opening hours:
- Monday to Wednesday: 11:00–19:00
- Thursday: 11:00–20:00
- Friday and Saturday: 11:00–21:00
- Sunday: 12:00–19:00
Check the official website, julemarked.dk, for any changes.
What Can Visitors Expect?

The organisers call it Denmark’s largest Christmas market. Expect:
- A free ice rink – new in 2026, with free skate rental.
- Wooden stalls with Christmas decorations, gifts and crafts.
- Christmas food and drinks like gløgg, æbleskiver and brændte mandler.
- Santa Claus – Julemanden visits the market, making it a great stop for families.
Is There an Admission Fee?
No – entry is free, and so are the ice rink and skate rental. You only pay for food, drinks and gifts. Copenhagen is largely cashless, and cards and mobile payments are accepted almost everywhere.
How to Get to the Market
Nytorv and Gammeltorv sit right on Strøget by the old Courthouse, in the middle of Copenhagen’s historic centre.
- By Metro: Gammel Strand station is about a five-minute walk away.
- On foot: Rådhuspladsen (City Hall Square) is only about 200 metres away, and most central hotels are within walking distance.
- By bike: Copenhagen is very bike-friendly, with bike racks throughout the city centre.
Tips for Visiting
- Dress warmly: December temperatures usually hover around 0–5°C – bring gloves if you plan to skate.
- Go off-peak: Weekday daytime visits are calmer than evenings and weekends.
- Combine it: The new Jul På Højbro Plads is a short walk away along Strøget, and Tivoli is just past Rådhuspladsen.
- Look up: Climb the Round Tower nearby for views over the festive rooftops.
