Højbro Plads is one of my favourite squares in Copenhagen. Bishop Absalon, the city’s founder, sits on his horse looking out towards Christiansborg, the canal at Gammel Strand runs along one side, and Strøget is just around the corner. Come Christmas, it’s the perfect stage for a market.

Is There a Christmas Market at Højbro Plads in 2026?

Yes. Jul På Højbro Plads opens on Saturday 14 November 2026 and runs until Sunday 20 December 2026. It’s a new market, run by new owner Jackie Berdino.

The German-style market that filled the square in previous years will not take place at Højbro Plads in 2026 – its organiser has announced a move to Rådhuspladsen (City Hall Square), where a Christmas market is planned from 11 to 20 December.

Friday–Saturday: 11:00–21:00

What Makes Jul På Højbro Plads Special?

The big idea is the Danish Realm – rigsfællesskabet – the community of Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Stalls come from all three, bringing Christmas traditions, tastes, crafts and stories you rarely find together in one place, and the entertainment programme represents all three as well.

Expect thousands of lights, Christmas treats, design and crafts, concerts, entertainment and family activities. The organisers sum up their ambition nicely: it’s about gathering around each other – not just around Christmas.

Talking Trees and a New Christmas Tale for Kids

Families should make a beeline for the large interactive children’s Christmas exhibition. Here, talking trees tell a brand-new tale about Julius Klejne – a fitting touch in the city that gave the world Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales.

What Food and Drinks Can I Expect?

Classic Danish Christmas treats are on the menu – think steaming gløgg (Danish mulled wine) and æbleskiver (round pancake puffs served with jam and powdered sugar) – alongside tastes from Greenland and the Faroe Islands. The full list of stalls hadn’t been published at the time of writing.

How Do I Get to Højbro Plads?

The market is at Højbro Plads 9, 1200 København K, in the heart of the old city.

Metro: Gammel Strand station is right next to the square.
On foot: It’s a couple of minutes from Strøget and just across the canal from Christiansborg Palace.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

Weekday afternoons are the calmest. It gets dark around 15:30–16:00 in December, which is when the lights really come alive, and Friday and Saturday evenings – when the market stays open until 21:00 – are the liveliest.

How Does It Compare to Other Copenhagen Christmas Markets?

With its children’s exhibition and its focus on Greenland and the Faroe Islands alongside Denmark, Jul På Højbro Plads has a character of its own.
